Hair Loss, Confidence and SMP: Why Russ Nicholson Founded HeadStrong Clinic in Cheltenham
Russ Nicholson is the founder of HeadStrong Clinic in Cheltenham and one of Europe's leading scalp micropigmentation (SMP) artists. He lost his own hair in his twenties. SMP gave him his confidence back, so he retrained and opened a clinic to do the same for others.
Who is Russ Nicholson?
Russ is the founder of HeadStrong Clinic, an SMP, laser and skin clinic in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He started losing his hair in his twenties, and it hit him harder than he expected.

"People say 'it's only hair', but when it's happening to you, it doesn't feel small," he says. "It chips away at your confidence – in photos, social situations, at work. It's always in the background."
Years later he had scalp micropigmentation himself. "It transformed my life, not just visually but emotionally. I stopped thinking about my hair constantly, and that mental space coming back was huge." Inspired by what it did for him, he retrained so he could offer the same to others. He had never tattooed before, but from the first go, it clicked.
What is scalp micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical treatment that deposits pigment into the scalp to replicate natural hair follicles. The result looks like a full head of closely shaved hair. Treatment usually runs across several sessions, often 12 to 13 hours in total.
"It wasn't about vanity," Russ says. "It was about confidence and feeling comfortable in my own skin again."
SMP vs hair transplant: what's the difference?
A hair transplant moves follicles from one part of the scalp to another, so hair can grow longer. SMP creates the look of a shaved head without surgery.
Hair transplant: surgical, expensive, and results vary. It suits the right candidate, but hair loss can continue afterwards.
SMP: permanent, non-surgical, and suited to advanced hair loss where a transplant would give thin coverage.
"I've seen excellent transplant outcomes, but I've also seen significant scarring and disappointing results," says Russ. "With SMP, the shaved head becomes a choice rather than a necessity – and that shift in mindset is incredibly powerful."

Is SMP only for men?
No. SMP works well for women with thinning hair, adding the appearance of density where the scalp shows through. It can also help some people living with alopecia, depending on suitability.
What else does HeadStrong Clinic offer?
Alongside SMP, the clinic offers:
Hyper Realism brows – fine, hair-like strokes for thinning or patchy brows
Laser tattoo removal – for faded, blown-out or unwanted tattoos
Laser hair removal – for men and women
IPL skin rejuvenation – for pigmentation, rosacea, thread veins, acne and ageing
Carbon laser facials – the 'Hollywood Facial', for deep cleansing, tone and texture
How does hair loss affect confidence?
Most men arrive at Russ's door in a cap. Many say very few people ever see them without one.
"It changes how you present yourself to the world and can even influence the opportunities you put yourself forward for," he says. After treatment, the change is often immediate. "People sit differently. They smile more. They often say, 'I wish I'd done this years ago.'"
Because Russ has been through it, clients open up quickly. "I don't just understand the treatment, I understand the emotional side of it too."
Why men's mental health matters to HeadStrong
Hair loss isn't the only reason someone struggles, but Russ has seen how deeply it can affect confidence. Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death for men under 50 in the UK.
Russ supports Andy's Man Club, which runs free peer-to-peer talking groups for men, and is a skincare advisor for Look Good Feel Better, which supports people living with cancer.
"HeadStrong isn't a mental health service," he says. "But for some people it can be a starting point – a place where they feel able to open up."

Russ's advice if hair loss is knocking your confidence
Be wary of what you read online. Much of it is marketing, and it can create more anxiety than answers.
Act early. The sooner you address thinning, the more options you have. SMP can add density to hair you still have.
Have an honest conversation. Lifestyle, medical routes and treatment can all play a part.
Know you're not alone. "Even if HeadStrong isn't the right fit, I'm always happy to point someone in the right direction."
